Gemba walk is a qualitative management tool that at problems that arises in management and the industry as a whole as being visible. In the event of a problem, Gemba walk requires that one has to go and visit the area where the problem has occurred, understand the full impact of the problem and gather information from all available sources without being scripted or bounded with what one needs to ask.
Gemba walk being an activity that takes management on the front line to look at wastages and opportunities is seen as a form of management by walking around as managers are not only centralized in one area handling problems only at the top of the organization but they move around the organization and visit areas that are experiencing problems with a view of providing solutions
In setting up a new business venture, gemba walk plays a very significant role in that for an organization to be customer driven, one has to go to the customer’s gemba to understand his problems in order to come up with products tailored to meet the specific needs of customers.
In business organization, gemba is looked at as a place where value is created as one visits a specified area which is the gemba, he is able to understand problems and look at the available opportunities and thus come up with products that will on to meet the specific needs of that area or the specified needs of people in that particular gemba.
In manufacturing industry, gemba is seen as the factory floor or the site. Which may comprise the construction sites or sales floor where one has to directly interact with the customers in order to understand their needs and serve them appropriately based on their needs.
In transforming user demands into quality design by deploying quality forming function, gemba walk plays an important role as it provide the planner or manager the real situation at hand thus one is able to focus on the characteristics of a new or existing product or service from a market segment view point.
